Cosmetic injectables, especially BOTOX® Cosmetic, have seen a surge in popularity in the last few years – not only on the mainland, but here in Hawaii as well. These minimally invasive, non-surgical treatments can temporarily revitalize the facial aesthetic, creating a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Patients who visit our Honolulu practice have the option of choosing from several injectable treatments, which are generally divided into two categories: neurotoxin injectables and dermal fillers. As an experienced injector, Dr. Alan Faulkner is aware of the major differences that set these two apart, which he has outlined below.

Firstly, dermal fillers are often composed primarily of hyaluronic acid (HA) – a naturally-occurring substance that helps the skin hydrate itself. They are used to address “static wrinkles,” which appear over time as a result of collagen and elastin depletion. Dermal fillers can also plump the lips, contour the cheeks, and smooth facial folds and creases. At Aloha Laser Aesthetics, we offer both the Restylane® line of products and the Revance® RHA® Collection of Dermal Fillers, two of the most popular dermal filler families in the field.

Neurotoxin injectables differ from dermal fillers in a few distinct ways. For instance, they contain botulinum toxin, which can temporarily prevent facial muscles from contracting. As such, they are administered to combat “dynamic wrinkles,” or wrinkles that are caused by repetitive facial movements. While BOTOX® Cosmetic was developed to reduce dynamic wrinkles in several areas of the face (e.g. crow’s feet, marionette lines, and muscular banding), other neurotoxin injectables, such as Jeuveau™, specifically target glabellar lines (also known as “frown” or “11” lines).
